Detailing ‘Business in Context’ – a model by Needle (1995)

In accordance with this model, businesses can be divided into several concentric rings (with the main activity level in the middle) each of these rings can perhaps be likened to the various corporate network levels of a company.

The activity level will be the inside of the company where company secrets about product design, components and/or specific materials + services employed by the company will be kept; this would likely be the company INTRANET.

The next levels are marketing and strategic with the market level being closer to the inside of the company (more to do with what the company produces + sales of said than what products used and purchase of those) – likely these levels would be connected to the company’s EXTRANET in any working scenario’s; being connected to the outside world and the heart of the company. The outermost layer of any company is the environmental level and relates primarily to how the company fits in as a neighbour within the community, a company that habitually creates a lot of dust and noise is less likely to be welcome in a residential or banking area. The ENVIRONMENTAL LEVEL of ANY company is its official face to the world and can be similar to the WORLD WIDE WEB layer of our network model …tidy corporate web scripts, while relating more also on the strategic and marketing levels, are (just like the companies public areas) like the face of the company – a simple thing like a shoddily put together company website can be just as off putting to the customer as a blocked yet UN-repaired toilet! The environmental level of a company is the way a plastics factory handles its waste, a discotheque contains its noise, a car body repair shop contains its pollution (polyester dust + fumes). In the discotheque, we can pass through the marketing and strategic levels and see agendas such as what food and / or beverages to sell + for what prices. Migrating through market level towards activity level, we pass through sales & marketing + public relations etc; Activity level within most companies is where all the skilled work takes place, from changing the beer barrels at the bar to working as a DJ (the discotheque); re-building peoples cars (Car Body shop).

This article is probably even more than what the title suggests – so, please …Read On!!!

I remember, during my years as a schoolboy, having just those little red exercise books and most lessons were simply blackboard after blackboard of ‘copying up’ –one of those little red exercise books was our designated ‘rough book’ although mine served as a ‘general purpose all-rounder’ containing my maths, English, French, chemistry and general scribblings all rolled into one!!! – including all of my homework ‘to-do’ lists!!! I can only look back at those times and wonder how it would have been – had we had computers like today as well as the miracle that has evolved from good old Arpanet!!!

In these times, we have got technological triumphs such as drop-box, Google drive, skydrive and Ubuntu one – to name but a few!!! all of this fits beautifully with such super-concepts as module learning which in itself is one component which is needed to achieve the level of efficiency that is needed to make the level of headway that we can and are making in these times! …had the course that I am doing now relied solely on old fashioned hand-written works then I would be writing this after a Decade or TWO in attendance at The Manchester College!!!

I already Do have an (old fashioned) filing cabinet which is mainly a place for me to store all of my old fashioned paper clutter in some place other than the floor, kitchen drawer, airing cupboard, mantle piece; – I now have several large folders containing master copies of submitted works and general favorites; however, all of my modules that I have ever done (since 2012) are backed up onto the cloud with more than one way!!!

The BEST FACT about MODULE LEARNING is that (as a technique) it is simply MADE for THESE TIMES!!! there have been many occasions (over these past years/months) where my internal file-searching has retrieved files from OLD MODULES from OLD COURSES and HELPED ME + MORE than you can IMAGINE!!!

The IT WORLD and MUSIC PRODUCTION

Over the years, most of the world has watched the technology develop. I can remember in my youth when the backbone of many synthesisers was a master tone generator, or a collection of analog oscillators, and a piano keyboard; nowadays, it is a small computer – with interfaces such as MIDI, Firewire and USB being commonplace in todays state-of-the-art hardware.

As the technology with most consumer/ commercial/ military hardware has improved, so has the technology around computers – with the arrival of what can be best described as a ‘C64 Revival’; (“Commodore 64 rises from the 80s | News | PC Pro,” n.d.) a sleek new client computer that has all the features of most of today’s towers included Inside the Keyboard!!!

In the music production side of the computer world there has been a small revolution, with the evolution especially of a software protocol called ReWire; it works not only with REASON (by propellerheads software) but with a growing list of music/media production related software applications – this subject is covered in more detail in another article. But among the greats are Steinberg (“Home : Welcome to Steinberg | http://www.steinberg.net/,” n.d.), Ableton(“Music production with Live 9 and Push | Ableton,” n.d.);

: THIS is the ReWire logo it is (for me) an ULTIMATE SYMBOL of HUMAN COLLABORATION!!! – MOST People (sadly) only bicker amongst themselves (If they are even ‘interested’ – (in ‘Jamfabrik International’) – About WHICH exact DAW desks is the BEST; – while the AUTHORS play GOLF together and discuss Ways that their Products can Better INTERACT!!!

Detailed here is my OWN version of a talk-box (under construction) – my academic life has me too busy (yet) to get (back) into creating any sounds but I am hoping to find some spare time during this summer (2014) to do some (more) stuff; this time, I plan to use this gizmo to assist in my creation of some more renditions! – I do not yet consider myself to be really a music/media producer, although I am sure that there are and will be a lot of people out there who are soon going to recognize me as one! …Busy, I have been with the Network and IT side of the picture; my philosophy being that it is great to build CD racks as well as to create CD’s – that way, I can promote/market the works of others and hopefully find a system of mutual ‘back scratching’ unfold from there…

From the angle of an amateur rendition artist and entrepeneur, I have found the same old picture of machines getting faster but the whole picture being hampered by LAN speed issues when working with network drives; waiting ten, twenty or more minutes for a project to load from a network place. When innovations such as Active Directory and Encryption are used there is AGAIN an argument that All of the LAN across the studio(s) must be at Least a 1Gbps connection – With at LEAST an i7 equivalent for ALL workstations within the organization.

DETAILING A JOURNEY; FROM YESTERDAY to TOMORROW…

This article is a story about our world and us, about the huge distance that human kind has traveled in just 100 years, the way(s) that we have progressed both forward and backward in that time.

When I was young, my hobby was electronics and I used to even use my school dinner money as collateral for my various whee lings and dealings with these things, I used to hold single transistors in my fingers and could somehow ‘feel’ that this was a Big Thing! (little did any of us know just how big).

As the years went by, I discovered integrated circuit chips and became equally addicted to antics with these. Among the projects that I completed were a wind speed analyzer, computer controlled alarm system and a custom job to adapt an old VCR into a security cam recorder – the security cam system was still working after fifteen years (after my last conversation with Dalby sq, Cliftonville) – we now know that the system is obsolete.

For all of my life, I have been a fan of electronic music, synths, drum machines and sequencers; as a schoolboy, I remember starting to build a synthesiser using an old school desklid. It was as recently as the turn of the millennium that I still had the ‘ambition’ to build a master tone generator (H & D, 1974) and install it inside a marble keyboard!!! …also, the idea to create audio filters using real components; and then, I discovered the ReWire group of software suites.

Going back to my youth, I used to make things for the garden (using old wood from around) my friends and I used to take market stalls from Glossop to Prestatyn and sell our products, I found that I was good at and enjoyed market trading (back there in the ‘old world’). Slowly slowly, as time has passed, much of the ‘first world’ has changed beyond all recognition – more people than ever are buying and selling online, but I (as an ‘old skool’ head) can still appreciate the values of real shops that sell real CD’s, Vinyls even tapes!!!

I am, at the time of writing, convinced that I will always understand the concept of a real shop with real customers coming and going – but will never see an online store as a replacement for all this, however – an online store could always serve as an extension to any real outfit but not necessarily the other way around. I think that any kind of web based entity is ‘dead in the water’ without some kind of ‘drive’ from the real world and some good Old Fashioned business admin.

This kind of business admin would be in the shape of promotional flyers, leaflets, letters – even posters and/or banners…….

Personally, I have had now some five years of experience with social media and found it (to-date) nigh on impossible to communicate with old friends with whom I had seemingly re-connected with; – as a result, it is my rock solid opinion that I should have actually gone and made contact in person! The only trouble with that approach is that I would still be traveling NOW between all the various places! Is it perhaps fair to say that all this virtual ways of connecting everything together will likely yield quantity rather than the quality that any Real Life equivalents have to offer!

During the past years, I created some amateur renditions (“PENNINESHIRE_CENTRAL’s stream on SoundCloud – Hear the world’s sounds,” n.d.) using some of today’s state-of the-art in Digital Audio Workstation applications including Ableton (“Music production with Live 9 and Push | Ableton,” n.d.) . Reason, Cakewalk, Steinberg were among my other favourites.

For quite some time, my cyber acoustic tantrums have simply been sat there (webside) as well as on my hdds and backup DVD’s. – I am thinking that when I finally become a good enough network manager to sufficiently organise myself that I might eventually come up with a product. Adjusting to the new school technologies is the primary key to becoming a piece of the action in any aspect of the I.T world.

The idea that the ordinary CD is now semi-obsolete is a stunning fact that all of humankind is slowly realizing. More and more people are using phones and tablets to listen to music; portable devices these days can hold anything from a shoe box full to a suit case full of media CD’s AND DVD’s!!! slowly slowly, people are waking up to what they are holding in their hand!!!

This is just a rough idea of the design that can be found stamped/milled onto press tools, special purpose machines and tools/jigs at certain engineering workshops across the world!!! what our Fathers and their Fathers used to stand on their feet at the steel milling machines and cut into steel, WE can now sit on our BUTTS in front of COMPUTERS and just Click it together with the Mouse! – and SOME of us think that what we have to do in These times is WORK!!! – Most people of THESE times simply do NOT KNOW that they are BORN!!!

I created this logo in the summer of 2012 while attending I.T workshops at Astral Training GLOSSOP; the government training programs and opportunities at that time were a dream come TRUE!!! (for me) – I had So MUCH skills and expertise with ITC stuff, yet NOT even the equivalent to a CLAIT certificate!!! …so, while others were getting their benefits sanctioned because they could Not be BOTHERED to spend a few hours at the ‘office’ – I mean, it was NOT even WORK!!! (and I ended up with some LOVELY little pieces of paper with ‘EDEXCEL’ and ‘BTEC’ -oh, and those little silver holograms).

– SUCCESS is the BEST DRUG!!!

During my life’s work to date, I have become very adept at woodwork, metalwork, property repair and development -including gardening. I have worked as a general groundsman for many individuals. I have had experience with block paving, tarmac, concrete, ceramic tiles and am personally very adept at any of these. As I am studying various aspects of the I.T world at the moment -as for the gardening side of things, I am simply an operative with all his own equipment who swiftly achieves results.

This is an article detailing another aspect of my life, namely my weaknesses; It was a bi-product of my youth that I developed, besides computers and electronics, a fondness for alcohol – It was only when I came of age and travelled across Europe that my career as an alcoholic really got under way.

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with enjoying a few glasses of wine over dinner while sitting with our friends in the sunshine; But there is one very important note as regards this, it only really applies to people who have become a resident of some place ‘Del Mar’, a place where the night life is 24 on 7!! That magical time border is in my personal experience around one year it is a significant border in time that applies to ALL MIGRANT WORKERS!!! It is at this point where the average casual summer worker/tourist must make that mandatory migration to the professional world of FULL-TIME STAFF-SIDE of that Hotel, Bar, Restaurant, even Beach Taverna; as for alcohol (at this point), we must learn to Sell it and Not drink it!

It is a border in time where the persons involved must either; GO PRO or DIE!!! – it is a border that surprisingly few people come through with their LIFES!!! I can only remember seven years ago riding along that seafront promenade to the bus station! Had I not made that journey then I would have gone the same route as my friends who stayed – one final journey to the graveyard!!!

In my youth, I was always prone to be lazy and dis-organised – these are qualities that generally matter less when we are young, besides alcoholism and drug abuse, these qualities were enemies that nearly cost me my life! – I look back over the years behind me and see a long narrow winding road that I often wonderhow I survived!What I am certain of is that it would be a crime against the lifeand the natureto even think about riding again on that same promenade as the piece of human wreckage who rode along there some seven years ago…

What I am more than happy to focus on in these times are my NEW WEAKNESSES; – My weakness for COMPUTERS and TECHNOLOGY – Also, my interest in music/media production; if you are in any of these fields then I can statethat the climate and environment of places like that in the picture (Crete, Ibiza, Corfu, Cyprus etc) will be a great asset; It is only those other aspects, such as boozing pill-popping and/or sleeping another one offor even puking until you rupture a stomach muscle that will be yourWORST ENEMY!!!
